Thoughts from Actors and Students:
Thoughts from Directors and Partnering Schools:
- "Something that sticks out about Jamie Macpherson's fight choreography style comes directly from her constant awareness and sensitivity to the emotional and mental space that her students, colleagues and fellow cast mates are existing in. She is incredibly communicative and encourages her students to do the same with each other." - Vickie Hall, Actress (Titus Andronicus)
Thoughts from Directors and Partnering Schools:
- "I have worked with Jamie multiple times as a fight director. Her communication is thoughtful and specific. She has a particular knack for creating strong professional working relationships with youth." Chris Weise (Arizona State University)
- "Jamie Macpherson served excellently as a guest teacher for three of my high school theatre classes, giving instruction and demonstration of hand-to-hand stage combat. I found her teaching approach to be thoughtful and engaging. My students had only praise for how well she engaged with them and how effectively she engaged them with the work. She took time to clarify safety guidelines and practices before getting into the physicality, managed class energy and focus extremely effectively, and built the activity from beginner to intermediate seamlessly. I especially appreciated that she went beyond techniques of knapping and throwing or taking hits, but emphasized the context of character and scene. Her students were challenged to act and justify the punches and slaps, just as theatre asks actors to justify lines. ...The class sessions that followed Jamie’s visits, my students were excited to review and continue the lessons, and were very eager to watch the videos of the scenes Jamie had them create. I would not be surprised if I contact Jamie in future years to return for recurring lessons! Thank you, Jamie!"
